The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in Eight Fits

The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in Eight Fits

by Carroll, Lewis (Dodgson, Charles)
London: Macmillan and Co., 1876 Illustrated by Henry Holiday. First edition, first printing, with "baker" on p. 83 and a single leaf of publisher's advertisements. Publisher's decorative light tan boards with illustrations by Holiday in black, lettered in black, all edges gilt, black endpapers. Near fine, with a touch of soiling to front board, moderate toning to spine, a touch of wear to the upper spine, tiny bookseller's embossed stamp to front free endpaper, and light offsetting from emblem on half-title page. Overall, an attractive copy, rarely found in such nice condition. Taylor 382.In this poem, Carroll returns to the setting of "Jabberwocky," the nonsense poem that was published as part of his 1872 novel Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There. Specifically, "The Hunting of the Snark" tells the story of ten sailors, each of whose name begins with the letter B, who are in search of a fearsome creature known as the "snark" which they fear may be an especially dangerous sort known as a "boojum." Like "Jabberwocky," this poem is filled with fantastical adventures, impossible scenarios, and gibberish words. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

ALICE IN WONDERLAND PANORAMA WITH MOVEABLE PICTURES

ALICE IN WONDERLAND PANORAMA WITH MOVEABLE PICTURES

by Carroll, Lewis; Bowley, A. L.
London: Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd, 1910. Very good plus.. First edition of this charming panorama of Alice's Wonderland adventures, with character cutouts to tuck into slots and rearrange the story however you like - rarely found complete. A. L. Bowley worked on a number of titles for Raphael Tuck, including this dynamic take on Lewis Carroll's beloved story. The instructions to the rear encourage readers to switch up the placement of the figures - which include the White Rabbit, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts, and Alice herself - in order to make their own version of the story. Its many moveable parts means that this panorama is unusual to find complete and intact, as this copy is. A beautiful Alice. 10.5'' x 47.5'' (unfolded); 10.5'' x 12'' (folded). Original color pictorial self wrapper. Illustrated in color on one side, black and white on the other. 15 color figures, complete. Four panels, folded concertina-style, with pocket to rear. Some edgewear and light soil to outside, a few closed tears and careful repairs. Several interior slots with closed tears, but sound. Colors bright.[Attributes: First Edition]

Original artwork for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland:

Original artwork for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: "A Mad Tea Party".

by PARKS, Phil (illus.); CARROLL, Lewis.
1995. First published within Firsts magazine for December 1995 to accompany Benjamin Harder's article, "Illustrating Alice". Phil Parks is a contemporary illustrator of horror novels and is particularly known for illustrating work by Dean Koontz, the American fantasy author. Original published artwork for Lewis Carroll's novel is not common. Harder stated that "the mass of Alice illustrators forms an unsteady but discernible pyramid. There are a few at the top who have created great works of art; a step down there are a handful of wizards who have managed interesting twists on the originals; and below them are the many who have turned out respectable, if uninspired, editions". The magazine Firsts - Collecting Modern First Editions commissioned Parks to provide a new illustration of the "Mad Tea-Party" featuring Alice, the March Hare, the Dormouse, and the Hatter from the seventh chapter of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Original drawing (455 x 340 mm) with decorative border (508 x 392 mm) on thin card (610 x 482 mm), ink and graphite, unsigned, mounted, framed and glazed (glazed size 742 x 625 mm). Fine condition. Alice In Wonderland A Play Compiled from Lewis Carroll's Stories

Alice In Wonderland A Play Compiled from Lewis Carroll's Stories "Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There

by CARROLL, Lewis [adapted by] Emily Prime Delafield
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1898. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue. 8vo. ix, [4], 2-89. List of characters. With four full-page plates, printed in red and black. Decorated endpapers printed in orange. Bound in cream paper-covered boards with striking full-color pictorial illustration on the front cover, and a detailed floral design on the rare cover, red lettering printed on spine. Dust-soiling to top edge; spine darkened, light wear to cover edges. Withal, a sturdy, presentable copy. First printing of the play compiled from Lewis Carroll works. Title page commentary: "Originally presented for the benefit of The Society of Decorative Art, at The Waldorf, New York. March thirteenth, 1897, and now for the first time printed."

A trifecta of subject, printing and design in one book: Lewis Carroll's stories, exquisite printing by D. B. Updike, at his Merrymount Press, and charming illustrations by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue. Indeed, it's a sought-after title for being an early Merrymount effort, for having Goodhue illustrations, and for simply being an uncommon Lewis Carroll book. For more on Goodhue, please see Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue. Architect and Master of Many Arts (AIA, 1925). A fragile book, offered here in handsome condition.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

by CARROLL, Lewis; John Tenniel - illustrations
Macmillan, New York, 1877. Small octavo, 192pp., illustrated by John Tenniel. This is the first American edition under the Macmillan imprint (the true first American edition was published by Appleton). Spine gently cocked, mild discoloration to the outer joint gutters, and the page block is generally just a bit sprung. Mild wear at the crown, small area of toning to the title page at gutter (from a laid-in strip of paper), some pencil notations to title page and a few internally (all erasable with some dedication). Gift inscription dated Christmas 1877 on a front blank. With all flaws, still a near fine, better than usual copy of this early edition of Alice, which, in the same binding style and with the same illustrations, is nearly identical to the first edition. Logical Nonsense: The Works of Lewis Carroll. Now, For the First Time, Complete

An excellent chronological arrangement of all of Carroll's writings collected into one volume. Biography, bibliography and index. 125 copies, signed by both editors, of which this is copy "L". ALICE IN WONDERLAND: A Play

by [Carroll, Lewis]; Delafield, Emily Prime; [Goodhue, Bertram]
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1898. Near fine.. First printing of this beautiful adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic, with illustrations inspired by early modern woodblocks - a scarce Goodhue work in exceptional condition. With woodcut illustrations that look like an incunable had a brief but inspiring friendship with Aubrey Beardsley, ALICE IN WONDERLAND is an attractive example of Bertram Godhue's Arts and Crafts sensibilities in book form. His bright, bold aesthetic is a perfect match for Emily Prime Delafield's interpretation of ALICE, which was first presented for The Society of Decorative Art with a cast of children. This is a very nice copy, rarely found so. 8'' x 5''. Original color pictorial boards. Red and yellow pictorial endpapers of Alice characters including the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee. Illustrated in black and red. 90 pages. Binding with light toning to spine, mild edgewear; one tiny spot of soil to title. Leaves with occasional faint finger soil. Bright.[Attributes: First Edition]

The Hunting of the Snark an Agony in Eight Fits. With nine illustrations by Henry Holiday.

by CARROLL, Lewis.
Londra, MacMillan and Co., 1876. in-8, pp. XIV, 84, (2), con 9 tavole illustrate a piena pagina. Legatura in tela editoriale originale, color nocciola, finemente figurata in nero su entrambi i piatti, titolo sempre in nero al dorso, sguardie nere, tagli dorati. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
